Biography/personal description:
The
son of a shoemaker, Heinrich Lehmann and seamstress, Lena, Klaus
was an only child. Bitten by the urge to fly in his teens, Klaus
followed the exploits of Otto Lilienthal, the Wright brothers, and
Bleriot. Klaus' parents discouraged such notions and his father urged
him to join the military. Initially disagreeing with the father who
wanted a better life for his son, Klaus resisted. Once the Great War
started however, Klaus was swept along on a wave of patriotism straight
into the cavalry where he served as a medic on the front lines. The
bitter reality of death in the trenches soon brought opportunity when,
while recovering from serious injuries suffered from an allied sniper,
Klaus was able to answer the call for "suicidal volunteers"
for the recently formed German Air Service, which after successful
training led to his eventual placement in Jagdstaffel 5.

Grand Cross of the Iron Cross The Grand Cross was of the same design as the Iron Cross 1st class, but physically larger and worn at the neck. In 1916, the grand cross was augmented with a breast star, which was bestowed upon only one recipient - Field Marshall Von Hindenburg. The Grand Cross is suspended from a black and white ribbon. There were only five recipients of the Grand Cross, including Hindenburg, and of course, the Kaiser himself.
