ADDITIONAL TRAINING RESOURCES - LESSONS

The following are optional training lessons that can be utilized by trainers with new recruits.

Goal

The primary goal of this program is to make every minute of online flight time meaningful and fun.

The following outline is intended for a new replacement pilot with no background in the game but somewhat familiar with flight simulations.  In other words the basics of flight will not be covered or at least not online.  Experienced pilots can skip portions of this program as their Commanding Officer (CO) sees fit.  Each flight will consist of a flight brief prepared by the lead and thoroughly read by the wingman prior to flight.  Debriefs to take place on TeamSpeak after each hop.

Part of the fun of flying online simulations is the chance to experience the world of fighter pilots in a somewhat less deadly setting while still having a good time.  To that end I’ve included the basic concepts used by fighter aircrews training today to lend the program some fun authenticity as well as provide a very practical training structure.  To that end this program is split into three kettes: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced flight training.

  1. Kette Lead – The standard kette flight lead capable of providing a helpful hand to the replacement pilot and provide a good example of the Jasta in action.  In many cases this will be the new pilots first chance to see what the outfit is really made of.

  2. Gruppe Lead – An experienced kette lead.  The main issue the separates the Gruppe lead from his kette counterpart is scope of interest.  Kette leads are primarily tactically oriented while the Gruppe lead is more strategic in thinking.

Basic Flight School -

Training Timeline:  Week 1

1 V 0

Basic course of training is conducted offline with computer AI opponents (useing Solo Mode of RB3D).  The idea here is to make sure the pilot has the basic situational awareness (SA) using views in game (switchology) covered.  Each pilots flight time with the Jasta is too precious to waste getting comfortable with keyboard and joystick commands.  Pilots should refer to the tutorial found in the Red Baron manual, along with the key command card (available at Jastaschule Valenciennes).  New pilots should print out, read and reread the various documents available at the Jastaschule.

New Pilots are further advised to schedule the Practice Flights below with their Kette/Gruppe leader as soon as possible.  Please let your trainer know your individual needs are; be sure to get any required additional assistance outside of Jasta practices.

Requirement: Ongoing Practice

1 V 1 – Two online pilots using a dedicated TeamSpeak session.

Training Timeline:  Week 2 and 3

  1. FAM (Familiarity) Hop (1 flight)

    1. Basic formation flying session

    2. Administrative MMP application differences

    3. Practice comm. brevity

    4. Tactical turns and expeditious breakup and rendezvous

    Completed

  2. A-G (Air to Ground) Hop (1 flight)

    1. Review FAM topics

    2. Lead kette on an unopposed bombing mission

    3. Bring FAM basics together in a tactical setting while learning how to attack a ground target quickly and effectively

    Completed

  3. A-A (Air to Air) Hop (3 flights)

    1. Review tactical flight basics – formation, comm., kette maneuvers, etc.

    2. Classic 1v1 aircraft maneuvering

    3. Aircraft initially employ rear-quarter only attacks

    4. Improve confidence in a high ‘G’ dynamic environment

    5. Bugout procedures

    Completed (all 3 flights)

Intermediate Flight School -

With the basics out of the way now it’s time to learn to fight in the basic fighter combat formation – the kette of two aircraft.  Emphasis for comm. discipline takes on a whole new dimension as the kette learns to fight as a team.

2 V 1 – Three online pilots

Training Timeline:  Weeks 2 and 3

  1. 2V1 (2 flights)

    1. Kette tactics in a single bogie environment

    2. Introduction to pre-merge formations

    3. Engaged maneuvering

    4. Comm.

    5. Mutual support

    6. Rear quarter kills only

    Completed (2 flights)

  2. 2V1 (1 flight)

    3. Situational awareness

    4. Bugout criteria and techniques

    5. First flight rear quarter & second flight all-aspect

    Completed (2 flights)

Advanced Flight School  -

Time to put it all together.  New emphasis now placed on setting up the attack pre-merge for optimum advantage.  Quick kills, mutual support and disengagement skills stressed.  Lookout doctrine, comm. discipline and situational awareness training continues.
