...it was a slide show when I tried to run it initially until I tweaked the video card and some other settings. However I probably need to reinstall it on my external drive as I've just about killed the C drive at this point. What do I need to know about how to patch it up?

Do the patches self install etc. unlike RB?

Depends on the Patch.
The 4.08 Patch is an 'Official Patch', available from the Ubisoft site.
If you 'save' it (an I don't see why anyone would) you will have to send it to your 1946 from there.

There is another Patch reqired before the Canvas Knights Patch.
(Hmm, Starting to sound complicated.)

I'll toss together a quickie guide and post it here for everyone.

If anyone got a better way don't let a Puter clutz go uncorrected.

Canvas Knights will be an Add-on Patch based on the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 Flight Simulator.
The standard IL-2 1946 will require some additions to prepare it for Canvas Knights.

First, IL-2 1946 is Version 4.07. This must be updated to Version 4.08.
The Official Version 4.08 Patch is available from the Ubisoft Site.

Second, Canvas Knights will require Version 4.09.
(An 'Unoffical Patch', as is Canvas Knights.)
4.09 is available from the ‘All Aircraft Arcade’ (AAA) community forums.
Register with the forum, log on and look for the 4.09 Patch.

A 'Switcher' Patch will likely be close by or included.
Once the 'Switcher' is installed this will enable you to change from 4.08 - 4.09 and back before starting your IL-2 1946.
It will be in your 1946 Folder files.

Better still may be the ‘Unified Installer’ from All Aircraft Arcade.
(The instructions are below the Down Load links on the same page.)
Lots and lots of candy for 1946.
This multiple Down Load is 2gig in size. It's a biggie.
(At 30mb per sec it took me 24hrs.)
This multi D/L is completely loaded by double clicking the EXE file.
That's the first file.

When Canvas Knights is released it is likely to be available from the ‘All Aircraft Arcade’ site first.
So remember you Logon Name and Password.

So, if I understand correctly, we don't need a seperate install for this Canvas Knights like we used to have for every different version of RB ? The switcher will take care of that ?

Yup thats right Vossie, as long as your patched up to 4.09 it should be just a case of downloading and installing Canvas Knights, Simples!

If I had done that at the time of your post above, Sir, I would have implied that they be definitive.
I could not do that.

I still can not make any definitive post as to even whether Canvas Knights (C.K.) will ever be released or not.

I can say (definitively) that I certainly expect C.K. to be released 'via' the AAA site before X-mas.
(Privately, the green Gruppe Leader has informed me that "The war will be over by X-Mas!")

Fortunately, I have been, reliably, informed about this(C.K.) from a Jasta 5 drome guard, who heard it from the COs driver, who heard it from an 'Intelegence' Officer'!!!, who got it from a recruit that had captured a 'Lance Corporal' of a British Cavalry Regt. that been transfered to the front. (from the other side).
Which means it's must be accurate!!

If any wanna believe me, then don't D/L the 4.09m (New 4.09 Standard) patch cause the AAA site will have a 'Switcher' that will be effective for the 4.09m (Official) AND the C.K. patch in their own good time.

Gentlemen! I do believe it is comming!

Salute all !

I've been trying to install 1946 on the new puter and it won't work.
I would like to try and install it on an external HD.
But first I tried to install it on my C-drive, because I read there were issues with running the game on windows 7 and to exlude any problems would arise on account of working with an external drive.
So, it doesn't work on the c-drive in windows 7.
I tried it on the external HD as well just for the sake of it.
No go.
Does anybody know how to get it spinning on W7 ?
And should it work just as well on the external drive without any magic ? And if I install it on the external HD will the patches find their way to the game or do I have to direct them there myself ? And how ? I can just save the patches, but where exactly do I install them then ?
So many questions and answers.... a prison.

It seems it was a windows 7 issue. I was told I would never be able to run it on an external HD, but it does so like a charm. For the time being. Fingers crossed !

I tried two versions: one external HD and one on Cdrive. They both start up, but both have the same problem: crash to desktop. Anyone had the same prob ?

Indeed, I did, as suggested on the sevenforums. I just read other IL2 pilots experience the same when they fly using perfect settings. I guess they mean excellent, which is how I play the game. I'll tune it down and see what the effect is.

Canvas Knights will Patch onto IL-2 version 4.08.

My Server is running IL-2 version 4.09 till the release of C.K.

That is because 4.09 has a better Early Plane selection.

The Program 'Hyperlobby' is the normal way into it.

The 'Stuff for Red Baron' site, with the RB Metta updated lists, also has my IL-2 servers IP Address
which can be entered into your IL-2 Multi Player.
