S!

No, no offense at all taken by me! I love discussing/debating colors because even if one "loses," inevitably one learns. Thus, it is impossible to "lose"!

Regarding Schaefer's tail possibly being red, no, I don't think it was red. The black is thinly applied and some of the "warm straw yellow" of the shellacked/varnished birch fuselage is showing through. Lothar von Richthofen and Eddy Lübbert of Jasta 11 each, at different times, described Schaefer's Albatros (actually, Albatrosses, as he had a few over time) as having a black tail. Lübbert's description was from 6 March 1917, and the photograph above was taken 9 March 1917.

Dear Sir, do you happen to have any information on Herr Könnecke? Thanks! JM

S!

Sorry for the ridiculous delay in my response; please forgive me.

To disappoint you further, I have only basic information on Könnecke from the Grub Street book Above the Lines, page 148. I'll post it below, in case you don't have it. (Mind you, this is straight from the book. I have not personally cross-checked the information.)

KÖNNECKE Otto Leutnant JASTA 25, 5

Born in Strasbourg, on 20 September 1892, he was a carpenter’s assistant, qualifying from the Building Trade School at Frankfurt am Main. In 1911 he volunteered for military service with Railroad Regiment Nr.3 at Hanau, but transferred in 1913 to FEA 4 at Metz where, as a NCO, he learnt to fly. By the outbreak of war he was serving as an instructor and remained as such until 3 December 1916 when he was sent to Macedonia to join Jasta 25. After an unconfirmed victory on 9 January, Könnecke scored his first confirmed victories in February. Like other talented pilots of Jasta 25, he was posted back to France and the Western Front. He joined Jasta 5 from AFP 2 in late April 1917 where he became one of the “Golden Triumvirate.” These three, all NCO pilots, were Könnecke, Rumey and Mai, who scored 109 of Jasta 5’s victories. Awarded the Golden Military Merit Cross on 12 May 1918, he was commissioned on 15 June. Awarded the Knight’s Cross with Swords of the Royal Hohenzollern House Order on 20 July, followed by the coveted Pour le Merite on 26 September… Post-war, he went to Lufthansa on its formation in 1926, before joining the Luftwaffe in 1935, reaching the rank of Major and commanding flying schools. After WW2 he lived in Germany until his death on 25 January 1956.

Here's a large Sanke of the picture you are already using:

I thought you were using a picture of Alfred E Newman from Mad Magazine! Well that clears it up :)

Hi Vorlander, my friend!

In my opinion, the Pfalz D.III above is not a Jasta 5 crate!
I think it belongs to Jasta 15. Maybe a pilot from Jasta 15 visited us.

This plane was later taken over by Claus von Waldow and he put his familiar "N" on it (perhabs it belonged to him even on this trip to Jasta 5 and only the "N" was added later)

Another clue for the Pfalz belonging to Jasta 15 is:
The Pfalz flown by Vfw Hegeler (Jasta 15) has the serial 4184/17 (that´s only 1 digit away from the above Pfalz).

So I think those 2 Pfalzes were shipped together to Jasta 15 at the same time!

You may be correct Bauernopfer; the picture does not ascribe the machine as belonging to Jasta 5 only that it is a picture of one taken at Jasta 5.
Prosit!

Bäumer, Sir,

I already sent some rare pics of Fokker D.VII to Rumey and Vorlander. (From a Windsock International booklet).
At the moment I´m not able to upload anything.
Shall I sent them to you, to upload them and add them to this topic.
It would be nice to have MORE pictures here.

Kind regards
