Willkommen, Rekruit!
Re: Willkommen, Rekruit!
S! All,
I've flown a handful of sorties with the fine fliers of Jasta 5 over the last month or so and have enjoyed it very much. J5_Mueller has inspired me to seriously invest time into taming the wild beast that is the DR.I in the spirit of combating the 'Camel Scourge' on Flugpark. I haven't flown with a J5 pilot I didn't have a great time with. After many (many!) years I think it's high time I join a unit and learn to fly as a member of a team.
Some random bits:
- I've been flying WW1 and WW2 'sims' since "Wings!" released in 1990. Knights of the Sky, Red Baron 3D, European Air War, and Rise of Flight were all games I enjoyed very much. My online presence then was very much an on-and-off-again affair, so I'm no Ace at all, but I know my way around these airplanes more or less.
- My favorite airplane in RoF was the Albatross D.III. I know. In FC I fly the Pfalz more than anything and force myself to DVIIF as needed. My love affair with the Dr.I is just beginning.
- Bonus: I'm in Texas, fluent in German (dual citizen), and am a student pilot working my way to PPL.
Looking forward to falling in with Jasta 5 if you'll have me.

Re: Willkommen, Rekruit!
Welcome SirK,
I have flown with you and found it very enjoyable as well.
Good to know a fellow pilot has the extensive roots to WWI flight sims. I too come from a Long time in the WWI sim era, starting with RB then to RBII in the 80's which was non-online sim since internet was not available at that time. I then purchased RB3D when I returned to the states in 92 where I flew on line a very brief period and remained off line until 2006 and this is when I joined Jasta 5. We have had many great pilots become members of J5. Muller, is a good DRI pilot along with Wolff and Klugerman and I believe Winkleman is also a good DR pilot as well . There are others as well but my mind slips in and out of conciseness and keeps me from remembering all . I favor the Albi, and Phaltz DIII as well. Daedallus is a beta tester and also has a lot of insight to most of these crates, he is also a good trainer. Most all of the pilots have insight that you will find useful.

Guten Tag Herr SirK,
Gut dass Sie bei uns sind! Good to have you with us, as Hauptmann Sturm mentioned, I like to fly the Dr.I.
Here are some tips:
It is somewhat tricky to fly, especially in the steep left hand turn, so when you feel that the kite is nosing up...., push down on the stick hard and apply full left rudder! She will turn on a dime then... It has surprised many a Camel-pilot..
If you want to dive from 4000 meters to the deck, apply this trick...: Open the mixture-valve 100%.... and then dive..., dive straight down! She can take it... No one expects a rotary to do this.. So use it when it you see an unexpecting Camel-jock below you. Don't forget to reset the mixture after resuming normal flight. Mixture setting depends on altitude. Watch the RPM-indicator for best results, but here are some indicators I use:
Start-up, steep-diving and landing : 100 %
up to 500 meters: 83-80%
500-1500: 80-75 %
1500-3000: 75-65%
When landing, close the throttle, bring the mixture to 100%, use the blip-switch to lose speed and let her glide in, she glides long with all those wings so start the approach at a relative long distance. The flare before touchdown is fairly steep, but don't worry, she won't stall on landing.
As soon as your wheels touch the ground stop blipping, pull the stick gently all the way in your stomach and hold the plane straight (I always look at he clouds for this) with your rudder. If you do this correctly, she will not make a ground loop.
If you want some private lessons, I'll be happy to teach you.

Re: Willkommen, Rekruit!
Salute guys! It's been a pleasure winging with you all the last several Sundays. After 8 years with the excellent folks at JG1, I'm looking for a bit of a change in scenery. If you'll have me, I'd like to apply to join J5.
